Imphal, February 15 2020:
For the first time in Manipur, Atrial Flutter (a well-known cause of palpitation), was permanently cured by a highly sophisticated and specialized procedure called Electrophysiological Study (EPS) and Radio Frequency Ablation (RF Ablation).
Rochullova (42/male), a resident of Aizawl with a history of dilated cardiomyopathy was admitted at SKY Hospital on January 15 as an emergency, with acute exacerbation of his heart failure due to rapid palpitation, caused by Atrial Flutter.
Traditionally, such Atrial Flutter is treated with drug therapy, which either suppresses the heart rate or reverts it to sinus rhythm with normal heart rate, said PRO, SKY Hospital.
He was initially treated for his heart failure with rate control of Atrial Flutter.
The drug therapy regime usually requires taking drug for life.
Even on medication, Atrial Flutter can come back anytime.
The recently developed technology, EPS can effectively conduct a "mapping" of the abnormal tissue which procedures the Flutter (palpitation) .
Once the source inside the heart is identified, electric current produced by the radio frequency will ablate (destroy) the source of the Flutter inside the heart by using electrodes (electric cable/wire), which precisely carries the current from outside the body to inside the heart and permanently ablate (destroy) the abnormal heart tissue causing "permanent cure" of the Atrial Flutter.
Rochullova subsequently underwent the EPS & RF Ablation on February 6.His poor heart function also improved immediately after the successful RF Ablation of the Flutter, it said and added that the patient started eating and drinking 2 hours after the procedure.
He started mobilising the next day and was discharged on February 10 .
Moreover, the patient does not have to take any drug for the Flutter anymore.
