Science Writing workshop underway

A four-day long training workshop on Science Writing and Journalism organized by Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC) underway since yesterday at the conference hall of Presidency College, Motbung in Sadar Hills.
Around 40 science teachers from various colleges and higher secondary schools under Senapati district are taking part in the workshop which aims to encourage budding science writers for popularisation of science among the masses.
The inaugural function of the workshop was attended by Dr T Gangte, Principal of Presidency College as Chief Guest; Th Surendranath, Director of MASTEC as President and Prof Arup K Misra from Assam Engineering College, Guwahati as Guest of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Surendranath stated that the main goal of the workshop is to reach out the benefits and ideas of science to the common people.
In the past there were not so many people in the State who are well versed with the field but now the scenario has changed with coming up of many science journalists.
Pointing out that knowledge of science is very much essential in every aspect of human life and so people should know the significance of the subject which has been playing a pivotal role in the development of human civilization and mankind, Surendranath informed that MASTEC has been organizing science meet, exhibition, Mathematic Day, etc every year in the State to educate the people on the importance of science.
On the second day of the workshop today, Editor of Hueiyen Lanpao daily (English edition) Satyajit Usham, Programme Executive of AIR Imphal A Gitchandra Sharma and Programme Executive of DDK Imphal Ak Khogendra Sharma presented lectures on the topics of 'Writing for newspaper and role of print media in popularisation of science', 'Writing for radio and opportunities for science writers at All India Radio' and 'Science writing for TV' respectively as resource persons.
The lectures were followed by interaction between the participants and the resource sources on development of science scripts for different media formats.
