Four held for extortion bid

The district police, in collaboration with personnel of 37 Assam Rifles, apprehended four persons during a cordon-and-search operation conducted late Thursday night.
The operation, which commenced around 11:15 pm, was conducted in the vicinity between Laijang and Songpi villages following a tip-off.
Acting on the intelligence received, the police and 37 Assam Rifles team swiftly mobilised to the area.
After a thorough search, the team successfully apprehended four individuals who were allegedly attempting to extort money from local residents, according to police sources.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Doujaithang alias Jaipu (42), son of Nehkholam of Tuibong village, Churachandpur; Kamminlian (34), son of Lamkhogin of Mata village, Churachandpur; Malsom (20), son of Hethang of HQ Veng, Churachandpur; and Thangsiam Haokip (27), son of Kamthang Haokip of S Toljang village, Churachandpur.
During the operation, a substantial cache of weapons was recovered, including an MAI MK-I assault rifle with magazine, one air gun, a 7.62mm AK rifle with 10 magazines, a 7.62mm SLR with 8 magazines, a 5.56mm rifle with 20 magazines, 13 SLR cartridges, 5 AK cartridges, 2 cartridges of 5.56mm, one 12-boregun, one .32 cartridge, and a .22 firearm with a magazine and one cartridge.
Additionally, a black Creta car without a registration number was seized.
An FIR has been filed against the apprehended individuals, the police sources added.
