Imphal, October 13 2015:
United Naga Council (UNC) is closely monitoring the steps taken by Manipur Government to allegedly "suppress" the people's democratic movement for its political rights and aspirations.
In a statement, UNC said the Government of Manipur is determine to take up different forms of "suppressive or oppressive measures" towards the hill tribes through bills, acts, orders, political and administrative decisions, directives etc., to grab "our land and to further divide tribal unity" .
UNC has appealed to Nagas and other tribal communities to remain alert and give a befitting response to "evil designs and policies" .
Rejecting the alleged "anti tribal 3 Bills and 2 Resolutions" passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 31 last and consequent upon the killing of 9 civilians including a minor and seriously injuring many more in Churachandpur, UNC recalled the alleged atrocities meted out by Chief Minister O Ibobi's security forces to the democratic and peaceful agitators killing two innocent students at Mao Gate on May 6, 2010 and two innocent civilians at Ukhrul on August 30, 2014.These had exposed the "anti tribal and communal attitude" of the State Government and a time has come for the tribal people to stand united and fight.
All through history, Nagas and their land has been inseparable and they had defended ancestral homeland since time immemorial, said UNC.
The council said hundreds and thousands of precious lives had been sacrificed and countless worth of properties destroyed for the cause.
"In view of the prevailing political situation, immediate attention of the Government of India is drawn for its political intervention to fulfill the political aspiration of the Nagas and tribals and for its hindrance, the State Government will be held responsible for any eventuality," the UNC note added.
