Imphal, September 12 2024:
Amid closure of the BJP Manipur Pradesh office "Thambal Shanglen" since Wednesday following instructions from the central leaderships to party's state office bearers to maintain top vigil, there is strong speculation about potential central government intervention regarding the ongoing crisis in the state.
The development assumes significance as the BJP-led NDA government will mark the 100th day Modi 3.0 on September 17, which also coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 74th birthday.
Addressing the current crisis is anticipated to be a key focus for the Modi 3.0 administration as part of its 100-day agenda.
According to reports, BJP national general secretary BL Santhosh has instructed the BJP state president A Sharda Devi to close the Thambal Shanglen at Nityaipat Chuthek in addition to informing all BJP office bearers to remain alert.
Accordingly, Thambal Shanglen ceased all activities since Wednesday with enhancement of deployment of Manipur police and CRPF personnel round the clock.
Regarding the evolving situation, some BJP MLAs revealed to this daily that the BJP national general secretary contacted A Sharda while she was in a meeting with other party office bearers on Wednesday.
The national general secretary instructed Sharda to close Thambal Shanglen, a move likely to be precautionary measure in anticipation of the central government making significant decisions regarding the ongoing crisis in the coming days, and possible unwanted incidents.
Narendra Modi was sworn in as the prime minister for the third consecutive term on June 9 last year, alongside the announcement of ministerial portfolios.
The government's agenda for the next 1,000 days was also outlined, including implementing new criminal laws by July 1, 2024; holding the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election before September 30 as directed by the Supreme Court; and addressing the Manipur crisis as a top priority, with the aim of resolving it.
The Modi 3.0 government will complete its 100 days in office on September 17 .
Meanwhile, the ongoing crisis in the state, which has persisted for over 16 months, has fuelled public anger and student protests, resulting in around 70 students being injured during a police crackdown.
In this context, the BJP national president's instruction to the State BJP president to close the party office, Thambal Shanglen, has sparked speculation that the central government may take decisive action regarding the crisis in the coming days.
When asked about potential central government decisions, some state BJP leaders suggested that the government might place the state administration under "suspended animation" temporarily to address the crisis.
Additionally, they indicated that representatives from the conflicting communities could be brought together to reach a consensus.
Following a resolution between the communities in conflict, there might also be a reshuffle of the current ministers.
