Imphal, June 11 2012:
Though the Government of India claims to treat the people of mainland India and North East equally in the eyes of law, psychologically the two sections of the people are never equally treated, Subir Bhaumik, Editor, Seven Sisters Post has exclaimed.
He was speaking at the Writer, Media and Public Interaction on "Self-determination Struggles of North East India" which was organized jointly by Arambam Samarendra Trust Imphal and All Manipur Working Journalist Union at Manipur Press Club here today.
Subir Bhaumik stated that India is a country made up of various small kingdoms.
It is very unfortunate that in a country where the great Mahatma was born, coercive force is being used to counter insurgency problems.
He contended that it is due to the inherent weakness in the Indian Federal set up that insurgency problems have crept in the North East.
The peace process being carried out between the Indian government of India and some of the UG groups should be carefully monitored by the people of North East.
Kaka D Iralu, Writer from Nagaland, who was one of the Panel speakers, observed that UG groups of Manipur have not responded to the offer for peace talks due to lack of sincerity and double-standard of the Government of India .
Iralu pointed out that we should understand all the conditions required before entering any peaceful talks with the Central government.
Hijam Rajesh, Editor of The Sangai Express (English), Ningthoukhongjam Ibungochoubi, Executive Editor of The Manipur Mail and Witoubou Newmai of Newmai News Network were among other Panel speakers of the session moderated by Irengbam Arun, Editor of Imphal Free Press.
