Imphal, August 10, 2014:
In addition to issuing a diktat for indefinite closure of all educational institutions in Ukhrul district headquarters with effect from August 9, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) has announced its decision to boycott the Independence Day celebration in Ukhrul.
A copy of the order on closure of schools was issued to educational institutes in Ukhrul town on Friday.
Meanwhile, in a statement signed jointly by its president and general secretary, TKS asserted that the measures were initiated to protest the move of the Manipur government "to militarize Ukhrul district" and creating a "war like situation".
TKS stated that the step was taken for the "safety of the student community in particular and the civil population at large, while mentioning it has constrained the body to issue "directive to shut down all the schools of UKhrul district Headquarter with effect from 9th Aug, 2014 until further directive".
The closure notice that was served to various schools in the afternoon on Friday, has left concerned parents and school authorities worried as it was sudden and unexpected from the apex student body.
In a separate order issued yesterday, TKS has also banned school students from participating in the ensuing Independence Day celebration on August 15 in Ukhrul district.
In fact, the students from various schools have been practicing and gearing up for the celebration.
