Imphal, August 10, 2012:
While paying tributes to patriots who laid down their lives in the 1891 Anglo-Manipur war, Coordination Committee (CorCom) of seven revolutionary organisations (KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF, UNLF & UPPK) has urged the people of the state to renew their vows for a bright and sovereign Manipur on the occasion of Patriots' Day on August 13. In a statement signed by its Media Co-ordinator H Poirei, CorCom stated that Manipur had been a sovereign kingdom in South East Asia.
With a history of more than 5000 years, Manipur was one of the powerful kingdoms constituted by different communities.
In many of the battles throughout its history, brave soldiers of Manipur defended its territories and live a free and prosperous lifestyle.
The 1891, Anglo-Manipuri war fought.
It was one of the fiercest battles against the mighty British Empire.
After the Khongjom battle, many patriots of Manipur were killed by the British on various days.
Before the killing of Yubaraj Koireng (Tikendrajit) and Thangal General on August 13, Pukhramba Fingang alias Kajao and Niranjan Subedar were killed on May 25 and June 8 respectively.
Later, on October 13, Chirai Thangal was killed by the British.
However, depiction of 1891 Anglo-Manipuri battle as a battle to defend the freedom of India would be an unfortunate incident in the history of Manipur.
Such depiction would diminish the meaning of the battle which was fought at the cost of many patriots of Manipur.
Today, people should study the significance of Anflo-Manipuri war of 1891 and then find out flaws in the present society.
Manipur people should also continue their fight against forceful annexation of Manipur.
Each and every people of Manipur should fight for its sovereignty to get themselves free from the clutch of the rule of Indian Constitution, the CorCom stated, while adding that this would only add to the meaning of observing the day.
