Imphal, December 09 2024:
Citing unnatural population growth in some of the hill districts of the state, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has drawn attention of the Upper House of the parliament to update National Register of Citizen (NRC) in Manipur with 1951 or 1961 as the base year.
In his speech in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Leishemba Sanajaoba informed that Manipur is facing socio-economic and demographic impact due to unnatural population growth in some of the hill districts.
He cited free movement between India and Myanmar, absence of border fencing, negligence of security forces guarding the border, unrest in Myanmar, and corrupt and insincere practices of census operators as the prime reasons for the unnatural growth of population in some of the hill districts.
The MP also drew the attention of the Central government to the impacts of the 19-month-long crisis in the state and hardships it has caused to the public while urging for early solution to the conflict.
He urged the House for facilitating expeditious border fencing works, scrap Free Movement Regime, set up population commission, update NRG, and resume biometric capturing of illegal immigrants at the earliest.
