Imphal, December 06 2024:
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs) in districts that currently do not have these institutions.
Under the Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme (Central Sector Scheme), three new NVs will also be set up in Manipur - in the districts of Thoubal, Kangpokpi, and Noney.
The other states to benefit from the initiative include Arunachal Pradesh (8 new NVs), Telangana (7), Assam(6), West Bengal (2), and Karnataka and Maharashtra (1 each) .
The total estimated cost for establishing the 28 new NVs is Rs 2,359.82 crore, which will be spread over a five-year period from 2024-25 to 2028-29 .
The amount includes Rs 1,944.19 crore for capital expenditure and Rs 415.63 crore for operational expenses.
The new NVs will provide education to 15,680 students (560 students per school) .
In line with the norms for running a full-fledged NV, the establishment of these schools will generate 1,316 permanent jobs.
Each of these fully residential, co-educational institutions will offer high-quality modern education from Class VI to XII, primarily to talented children from rural areas, regardless of their family's socio-economic background.
Admissions to these schools are based on a selection test, with approximately 49,640 students being admitted to Class VI every year across the country.
Currently, there are 661 sanctioned NVs, with 653 operational.
This expansion will further strengthen the reach of the Navodaya Vidyalaya network in India, enhancing access to quality education for rural students.
