Imphal, September 05 2014 :
Manipur joined the rest of the country in celebrating Teachers' Day at a state level function held at the premises of Bengali High School at Babupara here today.
In all, nine dedicated teachers were honoured with State awards, while three others were given Appreciation Awards during the state function held in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Dr.Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, who served as the second President and first Vice-president of India and in honour of the unique role taken by him as a teacher.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam stated that prior to the onset of formal education through schools and colleges in Manipur, learning of religious preaching served as education.
So, we should respect the teachers as next to God, he added.
Saying Teachers' day has been celebrated every year in the state, Gaikhangam yelled, 'I have not seen such huge programme of Teacher's Day celebration in my life' .
While emphasizing that honour should come from hard work, he appealed to the teachers to earn respect by making good contributions towards the society.
Calling upon the teachers to uphold the teaching profession, Gaikhangam urged teachers to avoid saying 'I am a mere teacher' .
"Let us strive to excel in the field of education, as sports and culture do in the state", the chief guest stressed.
People of all occupations need continuous study in their fields of profession, said Gaikhangam while asking those in teaching profession to be able to answer all questions.
It is only with the contribution of teachers that we stand today as Doctors, Engineers, MLAs, Ministers and so on, he asserted and appealed to teachers to work for development in the education sector in order to produce good citizens.
Paying due respect to those who are in teaching profession, Education Minister M.Okendro maintained that the rate of enrolment in government schools and colleges has considerably increased in Manipur today as compared to the condition a few years back.
Regretting over the inability to redress the shortage of teachers and infrastructure in the educational institutions, Minister Okendro appealed to the students to shun violence agitations.
Instead, he appealed to the students to cooperate in redressing the grievances.
Expressing confidence that the 'special needs' in education sector earmarked in the 15th Finance Commission being started from April 2015 will be able to fulfill the demands of educational institutes, the Education Minister said that the state will have a 'transfer policy' and the rationalization process is going on at present.
The transfer policy would provide opportunity for teachers posted in the hills to serve in the valley and vice versa, added Okendro while saying that under the policy, hill-valley ties will improve.
Out of the around 8000 graduates coming out every year, Manipur University accommodates only around 2000 students in the master courses, he pointed out while saying that DM College will be upgraded to a state university under the RUSA.
