Imphal, June 04 2011:
Asserting that the use of muscle power in election in hill areas and money power in the valley are unabated, NCP Manipur unit president Radhabinod Koijam today said that it is a shameful practice and rectifications should be made before things go worse.
The former CM, who spoke as chief guest at a function held at his residence at Thangmeiband to felicitate newly elected NCP councilors and ward development members of the Imphal Municipal Council, asserted that the trend of using muscle power to win elections in hill areas and distributing money to woo voters in the valley is rampant.
There will soon arrive at a situation when no meaning elections can be conducted in the state, he expressed.
The NCP is also ready to fight elections with such malpractices if no rectifications are made.
A diamond can only be cut by another diamond, he warned.
He announced that once the NCP comes to power, priority would be given to eliminate such evil practices that molests democracy.
He asserted that NCP candidates suffered defeat in the recently concluded IMC elections because of malpractices conducted by candidates of other political parties.
He alleged candidates of other political parties had even contacted wine vendors to woo voters.
Such practices are not a sign of a civilized world.
NCP vice president L Ibomcha, who attended the function as guest of honour, said that the recently concluded IMC election can be termed as the "Greatest Proxy Festival on Earth", alleging that some political parties left no stone unturned to win.
The felicitation function presided by NCP Manipur unit vice president Dr Jenson Haokip was attended by party MLAs, Thangjam Nandakishore, Doukhomang Khongsai and Salam Joy, as guests of honour.
