World Breastfeeding Week observed

Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI), incollaboration with the Breastfeeding Promotion Alliance of Manipur (BPAM), Indian Medical Association (IMA)- Manipur Branch, Imphal Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society (IOGS), Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), Pediatrics Association of Manipur, Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), and Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI), celebrated World Breastfeeding Week on Friday at Shija Auditorium.
The event which was conducted under the theme "Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All", was graced by Dr Jugindra Sorokhaibam, Director of Medical Services, Shija Hospitals; Dr Kh Pratima Devi, secretary, IOGS and Dr A Ibotombi Sharma, president, BPAM as presidium members, said a release issued by SHRI.
Dr James Elangbam, secretary, BPAM and Dr Longjam Basanta, secretary, PAM also attended the event as special invitees.
At the event, Dr Meenakshi Moirangthem, Consultant Pediatrician, Shija Hospitals, delivered the keynote address.
Dr Meenakshi provided insights into the health benefits of breastfeeding, challenges faced by mothers, and strategies to overcome these challenges.
She also offered practical advice and resources for mothers and healthcare professionals.
Dr Pratima said that the IOGS will always support efforts to increase the breastfeeding population.
Dr Jugindra reminded the audience of Shija's strong promotion of breastfeeding.
"The hospital has a creche for mothers to facilitate breastfeeding and does not provide cradles for patients delivering babies", he added.
Dr Ibotombi Sharma called for collaborative efforts to bridge gaps in breastfeeding support, ensuring every mother and child can thrive.
Over 60 participants including students, faculty members of Shija Academy, nurses, support staff of SHRI, volunteers and BPAM members also attended the event.

Health Services, Government of Manipur, on Thursday inaugurated the State level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 2024 at the conference hall of Family Welfare Department in Imphal.
The World Breastfeeding Week 2024 celebration was jointly organised by the Directorate of Health Services Manipur and State Health Society, NHM Manipur.
It was graced by Dr M Dinesh Singh, State Mission Director, NHM Manipur; Bunty Konthoujam, Joint Director, Social Welfare Department; Dr L Tomcha Khuman, Director, Family Welfare Services Manipur and Dr O Sanahanbi as presidium members.
At the event, Dr A Silvya, State Nodal Officer, Child Health, State Health Society, NHM Manipur delivered the keynote address.
The dignitaries also spoke on the need to support, promote & protect breastfeeding in lactating mothers to enable successful 6 months exclusive breastfeeding.
