Imphal, July 23 2020:
With the condition of Imphal-Jiribam highway (NH 37) deteriorating rapidly during the past few weeks, trucks drivers plying on the highway are facing a very difficult situation, said the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union (AMRTDMWU).
According to a press release issued by AMRTDMWU general secretary Maimom Anil, drivers are now afraid of driving trucks and transport essential commodities on the highway as its condition is too bad.
There is not a single section on the 220 Kms long highway which is fit for movement of trucks.
Apart from huge potholes and depressions which dot the highway, earth dug out by the sideline of the highway for laying telecommunication cables have been left unlevelled thereby making driving all the more difficult, Anil said.
Being rainy season, landslide is also very common at different sections of the highway but there is no one to repair the landslide affected sections promptly.
The conditions of Barak, Makru and Nung Dolan bridges are quite rickety due to the authority's failure to manage them properly, said the press release.
The matter has been raised with NHIDCL but they paid no attention, it decried.
Reiterating that drivers do not feel safe in driving heavy trucks along the highway, it appealed to the authority concerned to repair the highway urgently.
