Conclave hosted to enhance Manipur-Myanmar business

Imphal, November 22 2013 : A one-day Manipur-Myanmar business conclave was held today at Classic Hotel here which was organized by the Department of Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur.

Govindas Konthoujam, Minister of Commerce and Industries and O.Nabakishore, Principal Secretary (Commerce and Industries) graced the inaugural function of the business conclave as state representatives from the Government side while U SAW MYINT OO, Agriculture Minister of Mandalay Division, U Thangliana, MLA of Tamu, U MYINT OO, MLA of Sagaing and U AYEKO Secretary of Tamu Border Trade Chamber of Commerce as representatives of Myanmar.

In his address, Agriculture Minister of Mandalay Division U SAW MYINT OO said that the North East India's economic relation is very good with his country.

Expressing his view, he said that to initiate the trade relations between India and Myanmar, the money used for import-export should be either Rupee or Dollar to bridge the differences and allow easy trade and commerce.

The hydro-electric power projects in Myanmar need to be developed to bring up the country at par with the other nations, he added.

Following up to the speech of the Myanmar dignitary, Govindas Konthoujam said that North East India should be able to absorb maximum economic benefits from Myanmar to improve the economic condition of the regions.

Economic freedom among the countries should be made free-flow without any restraints, abiding the economic rules and norms of both the countries.

Prime Minister of India Dr.Manmohan Singh had visited Myanmar to initiate the trade and commerce relationship, he cited, adding that the Indian government has already given a green signal to the project initiated by the chief Minister of Tamu Division regarding the power generation of 400 MW in Myanmar.

The Indian government has also taken steps to improve the entrepreneur relationship between the two countries by allocating of 173 acres of land in Myanmar, 500 acres of land in Moreh and 400 acres of land at Special Economic Zones (SEZs), Govindas said, while expressing hope that with these steps, the conditions of import-export relations between the two countries will flourish.

He also noted that the Indian entrepreneurs should also try to establish themselves in the special economic zones of Myanmar and other neighbouring countries to improve the country's trade avenue.

The air and road routes connecting the two countries should also be improved so that economic conditions will improve with the business made easier.

Plans are underway for setting up of a cargo terminal in Imphal for Myanmar, he added.
