Imphal, July 22 2024:
In sync with the decision of Communist Party of India (CPI) National Council, Members of Parliament (MPs) of the party would pursue issues pertaining to the ongoing conflict in Manipur and also push for restoring the Special Category Status of Manipur.
In a release, CPI-Manipur State Council informed that the National Council of the party adopted a resolution in February to urge the central government restore the Special Category Status of Manipur with the same affirmed at the meeting of the Council held from July 13 to 15 .
CPI will demand for a socialist economy during the parliament session, which commenced on Monday.
The BJP-led NDA government has been disrespecting the Constitution and ignoring the rights of the people of Manipur staying in relief camps.
As such, the mental health of displaced people is deteriorating day-by-day, with some even taking the extreme step of committing suicide.
"Does the central government not have the responsibility to take care and look after the people of Manipur?" CPI-MSC questioned.
Noting that the previous parliament sessions did not figure Manipur as its agenda, the CPI state unit opined that that the on-going session might also not have a specific budget for Manipur.
Thus, the party, apart from pushing for Special Category Status of Manipur through MPs Prof Ak Bimol and Alfred Arthur, will extend support and demand for a special package for the state through its own MPs.
Additionally, the upcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly session should make the prevailing conflict as its special agenda for discussion.
The previous two absentee MLAs along with the ten MLAs should be made to attend the session, it stressed.
The party, meanwhile, strongly condemned the demolition of a residential building belonging to a Meetei at Khumujamba Meitei Leikai in Churachandpur town, a video of which surfaced on the social media a few days ago.
