Imphal, August 21 2012:
MP of Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency Dr Thokchom Meinya has drawn the attention of the Union Government on the need to undertake improvement of NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam) road as an all-weather road in Manipur.
Taking up the issue in the Parliament today, Dr Meinya stated "Without blaming on the monsoon, it's interesting to find the deplorable condition of NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) during monsoon.
The said NH caught the attention of the Government and the people when there is some bandh or blockade along NH 2 (Imphal-Dimapur road).
The need for improving this stretch road as an all-weather second lifeline of the State has always been felt, and accordingly, crores of rupees are being pumped in" .
Dr Meinya also recalled that Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh had assured that development work along Imphal-Jiribam road would be completed by 2013 in one of his sojourns to Imphal.
"But no progress in this regard has been made so far.
The topography of the land, over which the highway passes through, has often been cited as a stumbling block, but when the same excuse stretches on for years then it can no longer be taken as valid.
Unfortunately, it is the common people who are suffering the most.
Now to cross the Imphal-Jiribam Road of 222 Km, a truck takes nearly 4 to 5 days.
I, therefore, strongly urge upon the Union Government to immediately intervene and see that the assurance of the Hon'ble Prime Minister is fulfilled," Dr Meinya said.
