Adverse impacts of deforestation dissected

As in other parts of the world, the International Day of Forests was observed today at Makhapat Community Hall, Naharup, Imphal East on the theme "Let's Make Our Cities Cleaner, Healthier and Happier Place to Live!" .
The function organised by Indian Forests Service Association was graced by N Indrajeet Singh, Khetrigao A/C MLA; K Avi Angami, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PPCF), Manipur; Th MahendraPratap Singh, Chief Conservator ofForests (CCF), Manipur; Anurag Bajpai, CCF and Wildlife, Manipur and L Joykumar Singh, Divisional Forests Officer (DFO), Central Forest Division, Manipur as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the function, MLA Indrajeet termed International Day of Forests as an occasion that reminds people to be conscious of the importance of forests in human lives.
He stated that forests and human beings are inseparable as the former creates the conditions for human existence on earth besides acting as resources producing many necessary items needed in day to day living.
Asserting that public play a vital role in conservation of forests, he urged all particularly people in his constituency to extend cooperation to the endeavours of Forests Department to conserve forests and nature.
He lauded the Indian Forests Service Association for organising the observation in his constituency and at the same time asked the association to organise next year's edition in a grand manner.
Anurag Bajpai expressed contentment on the participation of a large number of women and children in the function with keen interests.
He observed that conservation of forests could be successfully executed with the collective effort of the department and public.
Delivering key note address at the function, Mahendra Pratap reminded that the International Day of Forests has been observed across the world on March 21 every year following a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly held on November 28, 2012 .
He highlighted the adverse impacts of deforestation while cautioning that Manipur may soon meet the severeness of climate change and other dreadful circumstances on account of non-equilibrium of natural cycle as faced in some European and African countries.
He noted that the growing resultant impacts of deforestation has been witnessed in the State too in many forms, including inconsistency in the normal routine of rainy season and dry season apart from an unprecedented increase in temperature and pollution levels.
