Mega event of BBBP Week on Jan 24

A meeting for Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) was held at the conference hall of Anthropology Department, Manipur University today, under the aegis of Social Welfare Department and Childline Nodal Organisation.
Giving the opening remarks, Social Welfare Joint Director (ICDS) Bantee Singh Konthoujam reminded that the Central Government launched the BBBP on January 22, 2015, with the aim of saving the girl child and to empower them.
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, BBBP Week will be launched all across the Nation from today, he said, adding that 8 districts of Manipur have also been selected out of the 405 districts of the country for the BBBP Week.
The said districts are Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul.
They were selected based on their child sex ratio.
As per the 2011 census, the child sex ratio in Manipur is 934:1000 (girls:boys), he explained.
The Joint Director informed that a calendar explaining the activities to be carried out during the BBBP Week has been sent to the Ministry concerned.
Steps have been taken up to organise the mega event of the BBBP Week at City Convention Centre on January 24.In the said event, there will be many programmes to showcase the talents of the children.
Felicitation of female administrators, sportspersons, renowned personalities will be done as well so that the girls can have a role model, he added.
The Joint Director further informed that plans are also underway to organised the BBBP Week at Block and village levels as well.
He explained that the meeting today has been organised to make the PRI members aware of the said activities off the BBBP Week from the grassroots level.
A large number of PRI members from Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching and Thoubal districts were present during the meeting.
Social Welfare Deputy Director K Saroja, Child Welfare Committee Imphal West Chairperson Th Rajkishore, State Adoption Resource Agency Programme Manager Miss Gyanilaxmi Thongam, Childline Nodal Organisation City Coordinator Miss Thongam Ibethoi and DCPU Thoubal legal cum probation officer Reena Chanu Moirangthem and other officials were also present at the meeting.
