Imphal, August 17 2021: The World Meitei Convention (WMC) has extended support to the demand of STDCM urging the Manipur Government to recommend inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

WMC said they have also been extending the same support to the Meetei/Meitei community in Assam who had been demanding the same.

In a statement issued today, WMC said, despite the Meitei/Meetei population being smaller than Naga and Chin-Kuki groups in the North East, the Meitei/Meetei were described as a major Indian community claiming Aryan lineage at the time of the merger.

This had forfeited the natural rights of the indigenous Meitei/Meetei people, as they can only settle in valley/plain which constitutes only about 10% of the entire area of the State.

WMC also appealed to all the political parties and community leaders of North East India to help and support the Meitei/Meetei in including them in the ST list.
