Imphal, August 16, 2012:
Members of All Lamka Taxi Owners' Society (ALTOS) today staged a protest demonstration at Tuibong Peace Ground, Churachandpur with an appeal to all UG groups not to make any unaffordable monetary demand.
Talking about the protest demonstration, ALTOS spokesman and assistant secretary Th Rokendro disclosed that one individual who identified himself as PREPAK activist demanded Rs 12,000 from each Winger van through mobile phone last month.
Members of the society responded by inviting the man who also claimed to be the outfit's Lamka town commander for a negotiation.
But the man contended that they (ALTOS members) should come to Moreh if there must be a negotiation because he could not come to Lamka.
The man also reportedly warned to deliver the amount demanded by August 22.Earlier, several UG groups made unaffordable monetary demands to the Society.
It is reported that ALTOS has around 30 Winger vans plying along Imphal-Churachandpur route.
The Society has no parking space at Imphal for the Govt has not made any arrangement so far towards this end.
Most of these vans were bought on loan for self-employment and the owners are yet to repay back the loan amount fully Rokendro said.
Under such circumstances, any monetary demand served to the Society is a big blow to each and every member.
On behalf of the Society, the spokesman appealed to all UG groups not to make unaffordable monetary demands to the Soci ety.
The protesters put up placards which read, "Don't serve us monetary demands", "Provide parking space", "We don't have any other sources of income except carrying passengers" etc.
Members of ALTOS later submitted a memorandum to the Churachandpur DC seeking intervention into the practice of serving monetary demands by UG groups and also to provide parking space for them at Imphal.
