Chandel, June 17 2022:
The Diocesan Social Service Society, DSSS, Mantripukhri under its Manos Unidas Project on Friday organised a training-cum-awareness programme for farmers at Leipung Tampak village.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kangjam Sonamani Singh, CTO (SWCE), ICAR-KVK, Chandel deliberated on the various aspects of soil and water conservation which is an integral part of sustainable natural resources management and sustainable agriculture, said a release issued by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Chandel.
He mentioned that irresponsible farming practices lead to loss of precious resources which can harm agriculture production in general and in the hills in particular.
"Deforestation and cultivation on sloping lands very often erode the soil causing floods, which washes away as much as hundreds of tons of farmland per year.
Improper planning and non-judicious use of water with improper adoption of proper harvesting measures leads to acute water shortages", he added.
Dr Kangjam Sonamani also urged the participants to adopt scientific farming technologies to improve crop production and achieve long-term higher farm productivity under climate variability.
Elaborating the harmful effects of paddy straw burning, he advocated the reuse and recycling of paddy straw in vermicomposting, mushroom cultivation and mulching.
Paul Keivom, Project Manager, Manos Unidas Project, DSSS explained in detail the intricacies of accounting and bookkeeping for the record maintenance of beneficiaries.
He encouraged the farmers to maintain utmost transparency in bookkeeping to make wise decisions on expenditure, planning investments and controlling financial decisions.
The training-cum-awareness programme was followed by an intense interactive session.
