Killing of driver Kumud Ali:: Assam transporters threaten to block NHs

In protest against the killing of truck driver Kumud Ali and giving 15 days' deadline for ensuring justice, Motor Transport Workers and Drivers Union, Karbi Anglong has threatened to launch blockade along all highways in Assam if the Government of Manipur fails to provide an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakhs to the bereaved family of the slain truck driver and recover the hijacked truck loaded with goods worth Rs 3 lakhs within the set deadline.
An ultimatum in this regard has been served by the Union to the Government of Manipur.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao over the phone in this regard, Krishna Bhattaraj, General Secretary of Motor Transport Workers and Drivers' Union, stated that the act of abducting truck driver Kumud Ali of Assam from Sekmai, which is just 22 kms from Imphal and later abandoning his dead body with his throat slit along the banks of Imphal River in Motbung, was indeed unfortunate and highly condemnable.
With such unwanted incident happenings in Manipur quite often, truck drivers from Assam are in a state of fear and are reluctant to do service through the State of Manipur, he pointed out.
In connection with the killing of Kumud Ali, the Govt of Manipur should provide an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakhs to the family of the deceased and recover the hijacked truck which was loaded with goods worth Rs 3 lakhs within 15 days, failing which intense agitation would be carried along NH 37 and NH 2 passing through Manipur and Nagaland, Bhattaraj warned.
Meanwhile, Goods Carrier Transport Welfare Union, Guwahati has also condemned the killing of truck driver Kumud Ali.
On the other hand, All Manipur Road Transport and Drivers Motor Workers Union has denounced the killing of driver Kumud Ali in the strongest term and demanded the State Government to provide an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs to the bereaved family; to arrest the culprits involved in the heinous crime and also to recover the hijacked goods laden truck.
Furthermore, the Union has threatened to launch cease work strike if the Government of Manipur fails to meet the demands within 15 days.
The Union has submitted a memorandum in this regard to the DGP, the SP of Imphal West and the OC of Sekmai Police Station.
