Imphal, June 13 2011:
A labourer, engaged in the construction of a village court building at Laishok village of Tamenglong district, was lynched by the villagers.
The victim was identified as Kiyam Suresh alias Tomba (44) son of K Goroba of Moirang Khoirangban Leikai of Bishnupur district.
Family source said that Suresh was engaged by head mason Moirangthem Bungcha along with five other persons of the same locality for the construction of the village court building at Laishok village located at Ngarian.
They left for the work on June 9 .
After reaching the village, the head mason came back on the next day saying that they had forgotten to take some equipment.
Another labourer, Rishikanta came back yesterday.
Suresh also left the work place yesterday evening saying that he would be going home.
When he lost his way at Joujantek and tracked on a footpath leading to Lower Ngarian, he intercepted a woman who came to fetch water from a gorge.
He approached the woman to ask for directions to lead him to his native village.
Due to a misunderstanding, the woman shouted in alarm and in response some villagers rushed to the spot and assaulted him.
Village elders who later arrived at the scene stopped the villagers from beating Suresh.
With multiple injuries in the assault, Suresh was rushed to the unit hospital of the 4/8 GR post at Ngariyan but he died there.
Bishnupur police have registered a case and conducted a postmortem on the dead body.
But the family is refusing to take back the body demanding justice.
The family denied that Suresh had left the labourers' shelter in the night to go home.
He is survived by his wife and four children.
