Imphal, September 11 2021:
Union minister for women and child development Smriti Jubin Irani arrived here for a two-day state visit on Saturday.
On the first day, Smriti attended an event related to Rashtriya Poshan Maah-2021 at City Convention Centre and expressed happiness over successful implementation of women-oriented schemes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the state.
Addressing the gathering, she said that the Central government has been taking up various welfare schemes for women and among the notable schemes is menstrual hygiene scheme.
It was a taboo to talk about menstruation in public until recently but PM Narendra Modi made it an issue for the society rather than the women only issue.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra scheme, the government has started giving away sanitary napkins at Rs 1 and this indeed is a step towards women empowerment and also to keep their health in check, she said.
For the welfare of women, PM Modi launched a scheme for construction of toilet and more than two lakh toilets have been constructed in Manipur and around 10 crore families across India have toilet facilities under the scheme, Smriti Irani said, adding that more than 35,000 people of Manipur have been benefitted under Ayushman Bharat scheme by providing Rs 5 lakh for medical treatment in a calendar year.
As promised in 2014, Prime Minister Modi provided free cooking gas to women by launching Ujjwala scheme and more than eight crore women have benefitted from this scheme so far, she said and also reflected on various other schemes launched by PM Modi for the welfare of the people particularly women.
While claiming that peace has returned to Manipur since the past four years due to improvement in law and order, Smriti Irani said that this is due to the people-oriented government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre.
She also said that more than seven lakh people of Manipur have been provided CMHT and Ayushman Bharat health cards.
During the event, the union minister also distributed medicinal plants and nutrition kits to Anganwadi workers and helpers.
The event was also attended by education minister S Rajen, MP Sanajaoba Leishemba, MLA and health advisor to CM Sapam Rajen and social welfare director Ng Uttam.
