Imphal, December 10 2024:
Kom Naga Union, Manipur (KONUM), has cautioned the Kom Tribe Council (KTC) and Kom Union Manipur (KUM) against distorting or manipulating historical facts regarding the Kom tribe's affiliation with the Naga family.
In a press statement, KONUM asserted that the shared heritage, which dates back to 30 AD, is irrefutable and forms the bedrock of the community's identity.
KONUM highlighted its integral role in the Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) and the United Naga Council (UNC) over the years, adding that the UNC has formally recognised the Kom tribe's affiliation with the Naga family, effectively settling the matter.
The union then urged KTC and KUM to abstain from instigating divisive politics within the Kom community, while warning that such actions would only serve to create rifts and undermine the progress made so far.
Calling for unity, KONUM appealed to the Kom community to uphold its historical legacy while fostering peace, harmony, and solidarity.
"We will not be swayed by divisive rhetoric or intimidated by threats.
Instead, we'll continue to work tirelessly for the betterment of our people," the statement affirmed.
"Any sparks that may arise will be the sole responsibility of those who fan the flames," declared KONUM.
At the same time, the union vehemently condemned the brutal assault of Dampi villagers by suspected Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) militants on December 4 .
KONUM called the attack as a heinous act of violence which has no place in society and demanded justice for the victims and their families.
