Laboratory confirmation for HMPV can be done for SARI cases through IDSP network and any suspect may contact district health authorities for further necessary action, Dr Chambo said, assuring the public that there is no need to panic.
The director's statement reminded people that HMPV is a respiratory illness discovered in 2001 and it is not a new virus or an imminent pandemic threat.
Symptoms are similar to any other respiratory viral infection.
Common symptoms are cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath.
Bronchitis and pneumonia may occur in severe cases, the statement said adding that transmission is through respiratory droplets, close personal contact and touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose and eyes.
The director, however, advised that suspected cases must be reported to the district health authorities for necessary action.
First identified in 2001 but known to circulate since the 1970s, human metapneurno-virus is a common respiratory virus that causes mild cold-like symptoms.
Health experts have highlighted its potential impact on children and older adults, urging vigilance for the warning signs.
