Tattoo art fast becoming a viable source of income for unemployed youth

Tattooing and its art has become a viable source of income in Manipur where a large portion of the youth are increasingly finding it difficult to find a source of livelihood .
This was stated by tattoo artist Morangam Khaling/ Mo Naga during a workshop organised at Unibrow Studio at M Studio, Kabo Leikai, Dewlahland, today .
Speaking to media persons, Morangam Khaling said that enthusiastic artist can easily earn ample income through tattooing .
He explained that many talented youth of the State are unemployed and stressed on the income potential of art and design.
He stated that the society is changing at a rapid pace and hard-working youth can now generate necessary income by working as tattoo artist.
Morangam Khaling narrated that he began tattooing from the year 2004 and during that time, there were only around 80 professional tattoo artists in the country .
Now the country has more than 20,000 professional tattoo artists, he said and added that tattoo art is rapidly catching up in Manipur and the demand for tattoo in the State has climbed significantly in past few years .
Many graduates and Masters degree holders from art and design colleges like NID, NIFT, Delhi College of Art, JJ School of art etc are trying their hands on tattooing because it not only fulfils the artistic need but also provide a source of income for the artists.
He also conveyed that Manipur ranks higher than any other NE States when it comes to tattoo skills and as such there is a huge potential for tattoo artist in the State .
Various Governments around the world even take up initiatives to generate employment for its people by means of tattoo art, he added .
Morangam Khaling said that almost 80 percent of the tattoo designs are based on various cultures or symbols which have great cultural significance and as such tattoo art, in a way, also promote tourism.
He further informed that a workshop on tattoo art will be held on December 9 at the studio The workshop aims to spread awareness about alternative career in art and design especially through tattooing and to spread awareness on how to be a professional artist and the technicalities of running a studio.
