IEI observes World Habitat Day

As observed across the globe, Institution of Engineers (India), Manipur State Centre celebrated World Habitat Day at its Seminar Hall in Government Polytechnic Campus, Takyel, Imphal today on the theme "Engaging Youth to create abetter future".
It was attended by Loktongbam Swamikanta Singh, Chairman, IEI Manipur State Centre: Huirem Bharat Meitei, Joint Honorary Secretary, IEI Manipur State Centre and Bikram Wangkheimayum, proprietor, Tampak Associates, Imphal as presidium members.
According to a release issued by IEI Manipur State Centre, the programme hosted by Langpoklakpam Denin Singh, Corporate Member, IEI began with an introductory speech from Tourangbam Rahul Singh, Corporate Member, IEI.
Speaking on the occasion, Bikram Wangkheimayum said that World Habitat Day is observed on the first Monday of October every year to acknowledge the state of our towns and cities, and the basic right of all to adequate shelter.
He recounted his wide range of experience as an architect in view of the Imphal city and explained that by 2050, more than 70% of the people in the globe will live in cities.
He briefly narrated about the formation of the Imphal valley and mentioned that the valley was once filled with water.
"The present Imphal city is chaotic and has uncontrolled growth", said Bikram while explaining that with respect to greater Imphal, only 6.8% is consumed for road layout and the city requires proper planning and urbanisation.
He also stressed that the present Imphal city has lots of inconveniences due to congestion and therefore the spaces for proper air flow and sunlight penetration amongst the houses in the city is not properly available.
"Youths must be empowered to bring out their creativity towards solving the future of urban areas", he added.
Loktongbam Swamikanta Singh spoke at length about the urban structure of Imphal city and compared the urban landscape of Singapore and Kathmandu cities.
The event culminated with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Thokchom Subhaschahdra Singh, Honorary Secretary, IEI Manipur State Centre.
The observation was attended by IEI Manipur State Centre Committee members, corporate members of IEI, special invitees and students.
