Imphal, January 07 2020:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded the State Government to send a recommendation to the National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE) for establishment of Model Multidisciplinary Colleges (MMC) in the State.
Speaking to media persons at DESAM office at Kwakeithel today, its president Salam Akash explained that the National Education Policy 2019 contains guidelines which requires establishment of MMC for necessary 4 years integrated courses in BA BEd or BSC BEd so as to ensure that only qualified and learned individuals can become teachers.
Accordingly, the NCTE called for recommendations from the States/UTs and the deadline for sending the recommendation was fixed on October 31 last year, he informed, adding that DESAM had appealed to the Education Minister and even the Governor of the State to send the recommendation while there was still enough time.
However, when NCTE released the names of the States/UTs which had submitted the recommendation, Manipur was nowhere to be found, Akash lamented, explaining that establishing MMC does not require additional funding as the new developments can be added to the already existing Government colleges of the State.
Failure to get included in the list is a grave mistake for the State, he claimed, explaining that BEd/MEd is very much required to become a teacher and currently there are around 17,000 teachers (from primary to higher secondary level) in the Government schools of the State.
Akash then alleged that many individuals, who are yet to complete BEd, are now even becoming teachers in some private schools recognised by the Government.
If the trend continues, there may come a time in the future when candidates will be sought from outside the State for need of better qualified teachers, he added and demanded the Chief Minister and his Cabinet of Ministers to do the needful at the earliest.
