Imphal, October 06 2013:
Of late there is a huge trust deficit among the people due to the loss of culture that we used to practise earlier.
One is even suspicious of ones neighbours as the new culture is devouring us.
And as such, erstwhile unheard thing like child trafficking has become rampant these days with one luring ones own neighbours with false promises to get their children trafficked.
These are echoed in a two-day event, "National Seminar on Protection of Trafficking in Women and Girl child" sponsored by Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) and organised by Manipur Women Co-ordinating Council (MWCOC) at Manipur Press Club here.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest Dr L Ibetombi Devi, chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) said a person does not hesitate to even lure his close neighbour with false promises in exchange of taking away their children to far off places.

"This has become possible due to the coming of new culture in our society," said Dr Ibetombi Devi.
She further said that sometimes ago trafficking was done only with girls but these days boys have also been trafficked.
She stressed the importance of regaining the old culture so as to minimise the trafficking cases.
The MSCW chairperson then said poverty and child trafficking are closely linked.
Also speaking on the occasion as guest of honour, Th Ibopishak Singh, State Chief Commissioner (Manipur State Bharat Scouts and Guides) said child trafficking is a big issue.
He opined that concerted awareness campaigns on the issue will help minimise the cases.
However, Ibopishak said education will overcome the problem.
K Pradipkumar, chairperson of Child Welfare Committee said globalisation is one one the factors to bring in child trafficking in the region.
He said after drug trafficking, child trafficking gives huge benefits to the traffickers while arms smuggling comes third.
"However, in the next few years time child trafficking will climb to the top position in this regard," predicted K Pradipkumar.
The second day of the seminar will be held on October 8 on account of the bandh tomorrow.
