Imphal, May 06 2015 :
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has underlined the inseparable relationship between Man and Nature.
He exhorted the people to plant saplings and stop unbridled deforestation.
The trees are supplying oxygen which is essential to all living beings and as such it is imperative that we protect plants.
He was speaking to the seventh Mahousha Ima Ningshi Tha held at the Lamyanba Shanglen on Tuesday.
It was jointly organised by the Royal Riders Manipur and Green Revolution Society, Manipur.
He further said that 90% of the territory of Manipur are in the hills.
He regretted that trees are felled down round the year for shifting cultivation and firewood.
Apart from appeals from the government to stop it there are various schemes to provide alternative source of income for the people in the hills.
The union government and the IOC are trying to make cooking gas available to the tribal families so that they no longer depend on the traditional firewood.
He also said that the government has a plan to buy the Shiroi mountain slopes from the village chieftains who are the owners so that this mountain where world famous shiroi lily is grown is kept out of the way from the people.
He also said that he was not happy that despite the supreme court ruling saw mills had been opened where planks are sawed off from timbers at various places.
He also said that he was pained at the Pallel shooting shortly after the Gwaltabi stand off.
The campaign will last one month during which saplings will be planted.
