Imphal, July 30 2015:
In a unanimous move today, Mapithel Dam Multipurpose Project Displaced Villages Committee (MDMPDVC) has decided to extend maximum co-operation and moral support to the proposed agitation of Mapithel Dam Affected Ching Tarn Organisation (MDACTO) regarding extreme dissatisfaction of the affected villagers.
It is clear that numerous people and villages around the dam have been displaced, said a statement.
The injudicious treatment of the Government has affected more than 20,000 people.
Even as rehabilitation and resettlement works for the affected villagers of Chadong and Lamlai Khunou villages have been abruptly stopped by the State Government, upstream villages are facing hardships in a disastrous manner, the statement said.
It further said that roads, communications and electricity have been cut off and the people who once subsisted on the natural resources and vegetations have been denied of access owing to massive submergence of lands, dwelling houses and sources thereby depriving the people of their means of livelihood.
On the other hand, after blocking the river, sand quarry and fishing which were once the main livelihoods of the downstream villages like Louphong, Phayang, Nongdam (Kuki and Tangkhul), Maphou Kuki, Tumukhong, Moirangpurel, Itham, Island, and TC pokpi are worst affected, the statement said.
The Government should announce economic rehabilitation for downstream villages affected by the dam at the earliest, said the statement.
