Imphal, September 29 2011:
Continuing with its anti-Autonomous District Councils (ADC) campaign the United Naga Council (UNC) has urged the Naga councilors to relinquish office so as to strengthen the movement for alternative arrangement.
In a press communiqu issued on Thursday, the UNC stated "We are now reaching out to all the Naga ADC members, irrespective of their party affiliation to urge them to vacate their chairs so as to strengthen the movement for alternative arrangement which is for all Nagas in Manipur, without
any exception" .
The apex Naga body asserted that the "Declaration of the Naga Peoples' Convention of 1st July, 2010 enjoins every Naga soul to stand together for our collective future and in protection of our identity and land.
The future of the Nagas as a people must be the concern of every Naga leader and the same must be the guiding spirit in the conduct of public life" .
Interestingly, the UNC also appealed to "the respective (ADC) family members, village councils, tribe hohos and social leaders to facilitate the return of the concerned (councilors) to the station that is morally and socially sanctioned" .
Further, it asked "the Naga ADC members must courageously abandon their misplaced positions and join their people in the journey of a common future" .
The appeal to the Naga ADC members came a day after the UNC called for total boycott of the upcoming by-polls in 10 constituencies scheduled in October.
"Any leader or individual person who loves the people and wants to serve them must be with the people and look up to the common agenda resolved by the people," it urged.
This time, the UNC's statement of appeal to Naga councilors has evoked an interesting argument.
In its earlier press release as carried in the media on September 28, the Naga body justified their stand citing the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council (MHADC) constituted after its Third Amendment Act, 2008 as having declared "null and void" by the Nagas.
On the ADC by-poll, however, the Naga body reiterated their stand urging all the Nagas at different levels "to ensure that the rejected ADC Election stands rejected" .
