Student bodies ban collection of tuition fees by schools

Imphal, May 29 2021: Raising strong objection against some private schools setting a deadline for paying monthly tuition fees by their students amid the hardships faced by the whole state due to Covid-19 related curfew, six student organisations have banned collection of monthly tuition fees by private schools until the government issues an order in this regard.

A joint statement signed by presidents of AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIMS said that parents are facing immense hardships as they could not earn any income due to the pandemic.

In this crisis period, some private schools are allowing only those students, who can pay monthly tuition fees, to join online classes and appear in online examinations.

Stating that the school authority should look after their students equally, the statement asked private schools to stop such discriminatory practices.

The statement then appealed to the education (s) department to issue a circular mentioning percentage of fees payable by students and salary payable to staff while also keeping in mind the school transport service providers.

It then asked the private schools not to collect tuition fees from their students until the government issues an applicable order in this regard.

The student bodies will not remain as silent spectator if any school is found collecting fees from their students in the meantime, it added.
