Imphal, March 29 2012:
Manipur Police Department needs to be streamlined and uplifted to the standard of world class police, thereby making it a people-friendly force, Home Minister Gaikhangam has reiterated.
He was speaking at a reception ceremony hosted in his honour by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhavan here today.
Gaikhangam, who has recently been inducted as a Cabinet Minister in the Ibobi-Ministry and taken over the responsibility of Home Department from Chief Minister O Ibobi, while still holding the charge of President of MPCC, observed that one of the most important tasks lying ahead of the Home Department is to build up and enhance police-public relationship which is at its worst today.
He expressed with confidence that the Police Department of the State can be streamlined in the same class as other Police Departments of the world as the police personnel of Manipur are smart, active and have the potential to become one of the best police forces in the country.
Gaikhangam disclosed that to bring about appropriate changes to create a friendly atmosphere between the public and the police, discussions with top officials of the Police Department are underway.
There would be no compromise over maintaining the law and order situation in the state and the Police Department would take up the responsibility of maintaining order and book law-breakers regardless of who they might be, he stated firmly.
Minister Gaikhangam further stated that to maintain the ground rules of Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement signed with Kuki militant outfits, all the weapons of the groups concerned, which are signatories of SoO with the government, would now be deposited in the custody of the government.
He appealed to all the Congress MLAs to stay intact within the party and work as one.
As a Minister, Gaikhangam assured that he would perform his duties efficiently and noted that the government exists because the Congress Party exists.
Without the party in existence, there would be no Congress government at all
He also called upon the legislators to work sincerely for the betterment of the state and not to consider them as hirelings of the government.
