Awareness / training programme held at Hungpung village

ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre in association with Cooperative Management, Imphal and Alumni Association of Agriculture College, Imphal organised an awareness cum training programme on how to produce high quality paddy seeds at Hungpung Village in Ukhrul district today.
Speaking on the occasion, I Meghachandra, Joint Director, ICAR-RC, Manipur Centre stated that in order to develop the agricultural sector and improve the economic condition of farmers, there needs to be an increased focus on various areas of agriculture.
Simply aping the farming techniques used in foreign nations will not guarantee positive results in a hilly region like Manipur as methods of farming more suitable to the topography, climate etc of the region must be considered, he said.
He highlighted the importance of selecting high value crops and producing good quality paddy seeds in farming.
Under ICAR's Institute of Seed Science, many initiatives have been undertaken to produce high quality seeds in the hilly regions of North east India, he asserted.
As such, ICAR Manipur Centre also continues to conduct training cum awareness programmes in various areas of the State in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras in the interest of farmers, he said.
During the programme, many agriculture experts educated the gathering on how to produce high quality seeds, ways to protect crops from pests, which types of fertilizers to use to increase yield etc.
Dignitaries present at the event also include Dr Solei Luiram, Head, KVK Ukhrul; Dr Ajit, SMS, KVK Ukhrul; Dr O Gunamani, project manager, Botanico Calgri; Dr A Herojit, Professor, CAU Imphal; Dr K Joychandra, Director, ICM and Dr L Nabachandra, Professor, CAU Imphal.
The programme also saw huge participation of farmers from Hungpung village.
