Training programme on coconut plantation starts at CAU

Directorate of Extension Education, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Lamphelpat has started a two day skill development training programme for farmers on "Package of Practices for coconut production" at the conference hall of the university today.
Speaking at the event, Vice Chancellor of the university Professor M Premjit said Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Assam are among the lead producer of coconut in the country.
Coconut plants in Manipur do bear fruit but the time it takes for the plants to bear fruit needs to be ascertained, he said.
Lifespan of a coconut plant is about 65 years.
Coconut plantation can be mixed with ginger, turmeric and pineapple, he said.
Coconut plants are found only in some parts of the State.
The Coconut Board is pushing for promotion of coconut plantation in the North-East Region, said Registrar CAU Mamocha Singh.
The board is eying at Meghalaya and Manipur for successful coconut plantation, he said.
This will be the first time and the plantation will be conducted in trial basis, he added.
Assam has successfully adopted the coconut plantation and is now the 10th largest producer of coconut in the country, he said.
