NBT sponsored book fair kicks off

Imphal, May 26 2018:
A book fair christened Imphal Book Fair which is organized by National Book Trust (NBT), India, Ministry of Human Resource Development in association with Directorate of Education (U) & Saheed Madhumangal Foundation began today at the campus of DM College of Science, Imphal.
The inaugural function of the book fair was graced by Y Khemchand Singh, Speaker, Manipur Legislative Assembly as the chief guest while Professor Ramjeevan Singh Thakur, Director, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus, Manipur, K Radhakumar, member, Sahitya Academy & Registrar, National Sport University attended the function as the guests of honour.
Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, Minister, Education and S Satyabhama Devi, Chairperson, Manipur State Women Development Corporation also attended the function as special invitee and dais member.
Speaking at the function, Khemchand observed that books are also .part of human civilization as human beings explore knowledge and wisdom from books too.
He further said that human world and books cannot be separated adding that it is essential for all to develop reading habits.
Lauding the NBT for organizing the book fair at Imphal, the Speaker informed that some books will be bought from the book fair to keep them in the State Assembly library.
Minister Radheshyam asserted that knowledge is the greatest wealth of man and book is the best source of knowledge to empower human beings and society.
Contending that books contain all the good and positive aspects of life, starting from the simplest things to the toughest forms, Radheshyam went on to opine that books can be considered as the best supporter of human beings which capacitates human beings every time.
He lamented that the habit of reading books among youths and students is declining while usage of social media has been rising.
Radhakumar said that knowledge earned by reading books must be utilized in all aspects of life while asking all, particularly the students and youth not to read books only for the purpose to score high marks in examinations.
He described books as a store house of knowledge saying that human beings of different generations can gain knowledge of past and present through reading books.
Professor Ramjeevan Singh Thakur pointed out that the books cannot be ignored in the internet and computer world as all their contents have not been authenticated like books.
Altogether 70 stalls from various publishing houses from the State and outside the State are participating in the book fair which will conclude on June 3 .
A few other publishing houses from other States shall arrived and open stalls at the book fair in the next couple of days.
