Bishnupur, November 25 2017:
In an effort to fight the decreasing number of migratory birds visiting Loktak Lake, Forest Department, Bishnupur and volunteers of Toubul Youth Development Association along with Global Science Centre, Khoijuman today launched a drive in and around the lake and recovered 13 bird nets and traps.
The drive was led by Bishnupur Forest Ranger Forest Officer S Ratankumar and Deputy Forest Ranger Md Talib Khan.
The drive was concentrated at Toubul, Khoijuman, Kwasiphai and villages around the Loktak Lake.
Poaching of migratory birds is a serious threat which led to the decline in number of migratory birds visiting the lake, said S Ratankumar.
He appealed all the people residing near and around the lake not to hunt migratory birds while cautioning that people might not witness such rare migratory birds in the future if the poaching continues.
Under the Wild Life Protection Act 1972, poaching of (wildlife) birds is a punishable offence with three months to three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000, said S Ratankumar while hinting that such drive will be conducted at other districts also.
