Govt taking steps to protect women's rights: CM Ibobi

Imphal, March 25 2015: Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on Wednesday said that his Government is taking all possible measures to protect the rights and privileges of women in the State.

He said this during the First North-East India Women Peace Congregation held here at Imphal Hotel organised by Northeast India Women Initiative for Peace (NEIWIP), Control Arms Foundation of India (CAFI) and Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network (MWGSN) .

Addressing the participants, Ibobi said that the State has experienced prolonged insurgency, counter-insurgency which affected the women folks most in terms of losing their husbands, fathers, sons as well as economic activity.

He said the issue might have led to "physical assault and injury, humiliation, rape and murder to the women themselves" .

The Chief Minister while lauding the efforts put in by the organisers stated that he welcomed the steps taken by the organizations in supporting the victims in terms of psychological and economic ways so as to uphold dignity in Society.

It may be mentioned that the Peace Congregation was the first of its kind where women from across eight Northeast States came together for seeking a collective space for Peace and Development in Northeast India Region.

With women participants from across the eight States, the congregation was aimed at making strategy to develop a Regional Action Plan on Women Peace and Security with reference to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 .
