CCpur, March 24 2018:
In its mission to be an eco-friendly congregation for a thousand Sunday school going children, the Children Department of Evangelical Baptist Convention Church, Hiangtam Lamka will celebrate one of Christians' most significant event, Palm Sunday with hand-crafted leaves that is said to be reusable.
On Sunday, Christians worldwide celebrated Jesus Christ's triumphant entrance into Jerusalem by waving palm fronds and the EBC Church will mark the day in a sustainable way, reports our correspondent.
The Superintendent of Church's children department, V Siamzading said time has come for people to see that their practices and commemorations are sustainable and nature friendly without losing its values.
For the first time in the Church's 85-year history, the congregation will wave something other than palms to commemorate Jesus Christ's entry into Jerusalem.
"Palms are certainly the tradition of the Church because it is likely that they were used on the original Palm Sunday," said Vungzamuan Valte, a DANICS turn Church elder and a Sunday School Teacher.
"But there is nothing magical about them.
It's just that they were local" to the Holy Land.
A piece of cloth cut to resemble plant leaves will replace the palm fronds, that the congregation used for the last several years, as part of the green initiative.
The Church had in the past cut-down innumerable trees to ensure that the nearly thousand people that usually turns-up to celebrate the Palm Sunday could get hold of fresh palm fronds.
During two services Sunday, members will march on the winding path leading to the Church waving the crafted leaves and they expect to repeat the celebration next year without any further expense and not having to cut trees.
Members enquired about the initiative.
A small group of teachers working on the craft told them: "It's legit.
It's OK.
God will
still love us" .
