Imphal, July 20 2022:
Expressing concern over loss of fish in Loktak Lake due to water transfer system adopted by Loktak Hydro-Electric Project for electricity generation, Loktak Development Authority (LDA) has urged National Hydro Electric Power Corporation Limited (NHPCL) for placing fish strainer at the mouth of the power channel at the earliest.
In a message sent to NHPCL general manager, LDA chairman M Asikumar raised the issue of loss of fish in Loktak Lake due to the water transfer system using power channel to draw water from the lake for electricity generation.
As a consequence, the fishing community of the lake is increasingly at risk of losing their livelihood with the decrease in catch.
Apart from affecting livelihood of the fishers, it also accounts for the sheer wastage of a valuable resource of the lake, he pointed out.
Asinikumar proposed construction of a fish strainer at the mouth of the power channel as it will not only prevent the fish from entering the power channel but also help fishing community in sustaining their livelihood, thus creating a balance between power generation and livelihood sustenance.
Stating that LDA has years of experience in lake management, he said that they are ready to offer assistance to Loktak Hydro-Electric Project through its technical team with the proposed project.
