Bird flu in Manipur :: Govt takes action; Cullings to start from today

Imphal, April 19 2015 : Bird flu (Avian Influenza � H5N1) whose deadly virus transmits to humans has broken out in Manipur.

Making this official announcement on Saturday night, Chief Secretary of Manipur PC Lawmkunga said that the culling and burial will begin from Monday under the supervision of the Veterinary department.

The fowl owners shall be adequately compensated.

The Government notification issued on Sunday said that some poultry birds in the Imphal branch of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) had shown symptoms of Avian Influenza.

Sources said that some chickens had died on April 6 .

Fluid samples were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal on April 16 .

The report was officially sent on April 18 by Dr Dewakar D Kulkarni who is the acting director of the institute.

He had reportedly also told the Veterinary director N Rajenddra about it over the phone.

A high level meeting chaired by the chief secretary was held on Saturday.

All poultry birds within 1 to 10 km from the ICAR declared as the epicentre will be culled and buried.

Movement of birds and poultry products is banned.

The District Magistrate (DM) shall take up necessary actions going to the extent of clamping even prohibitory orders.

The veterinary dept shall deploy rapid response teams for culling and surveillance.
