18-yr 'tricks' girlfriend to commit suicide

Imphal, June 18 2011: An 18-year-old boy allegedly persuaded his 17-year-old girlfriend to commit suicide along with him and then made her consume poison last night at Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai in Thoubal district.

The girl was identified as Nazia Hassan daughter of Md Jaheruddin.

She committed suicide in her room last night.

A pesticide was recovered from her room.

Her boyfriend was identified as Md Sahid Ajmer alias Naobi (18) son of Md Haji Taher Ali of same locality.

They met yesterday around 5.30 pm at Nazia's grand mother's house.

Her grand mother scolded and turned out Ajmer.

In the night, when Nazia screamed loudly, her grand mother rushed to her room where Nazia had consumed the pesticide.

Ajmer was also found in the room.

Family members confined Ajmer till this morning and produced him before the locals who gathered at the house after hearing news of Nazia's death.

The irate crowd attacked Ajmer.

Police and local elders convinced the crowd to calm down and to settle the matter through talks.

Local reports said the matter was settled after the family of Ajmer agreed to compensate ' 6.5 lakhs to the victim's family.

In another unrelated incident, a 43-year old man committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope at Thoubal Ningombam today morning.

He was identified as Thokchom Joy (43) of Thoubal Charangpat Mayai Leikai.

Police have registered a case, reports said.
