You can now sell plastic waste at this recycling unit

Dr Rajkumari Babita, a resident of Kakwa Ningomthong Bazar, has handed over plastic waste she collected to the proprietor of Devchand Plastic Industry, Patsoi Part-II, Debeshor Irom, today.
Speaking to media persons, Dr RK Babita, who is an Assistant Professor at Imphal College, Chemistry Department, said that her gesture aims at spreading awareness on how plastic waste can be collected and deposited to the recycling unit.
As plastic waste is considered the most hazardous among the total solid waste generated worldwide, only collecting it will not serve any purpose, she said and opined that regular awareness programme should be held on this matter to minimize the generation of plastic waste.
Dr Babita then urged all concerned to inform the recycling unit and sell the plastic waste when they have more than 30kg instead of disposing it on their own.
Proprietor of Devchand Plastic Industry, Debeshor Irom informed that they buy plastic waste at the rate of Rs 10 per kg (within 10 km radius of the unit) and Rs 6 to 8 (beyond 10 Km) if they pick up and at Rs 12 if the waste are brought in by the individuals directly.
Stating that the recycling unit has not all the equipments or facilities to recycle/degrade the plastic waste collected from the public, he added the waste which cannot be managed in the State are exported/sold to other State like Assam, Meghalaya, Delhi etc.
The industry also manufactures several items like mug, pipe and flowerpot from the plastic waste, he said and added that the industry is paying one elder Rs 12,000 per month to collect plastic waste from Patsoi area.
