Scribes awarded on National Press Day

Seven scribes of the State, including an Editor,have been honoured as Manipur joined the country in celebrating National Press Day.
The celebratory function organised by Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) was held at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul today in which The Sangai Express staff reporter Sapam Aruna was one of the award recipients.
While Aruna bagged the award for her reporting on issues related to 'women and children', Imphal Free Press Editor Pradip Phanjoubam was honoured as the best Editor for his write-ups on 'communal harmony and national integration'.
The other award winners are Sanaleibak daily's Nepram Krishnamohan Singh (Parliamentary), Ireibak's Kakchingtabam Vedajit Sharma (Health & Hygiene), Huieyen Lanpao's Wangkhem Rishikesh Singh (Sports), and Poknapham duo Angom Ranjit (Science & Technology) and Potsangbam Bishokanta (Rural reporting).
All the awards carry Rs 25,000, citation and shawl each and was presented by Parliamentary Secretary (IPR) MLA K Meghachandra.
While calling upon the media fraternity to sustain its contribution in the overall development of the State, Meghachandra noted that infrastructures and equipment of DIPR need to be upgraded to cater to the present day requirements.
Pointing out that National Press Day is being celebrated to highlight importance of freedom of the media and its positive role in moulding the society, he also opined that reports about development works being implemented by the Government of Manipur should be accommodated in the dailies.
All Manipur working Journalists' Union president A Mobi Singh in his speech conceded that inspite of the State's media shaping up as a major organisation it is yet to live upto the people's expectation.
Hinting that most of the media houses are controlled by the respective owners/publishers, Mobi stressed on the need for enabling the media persons perform their duty in an independent manner.
He also advised IPR officials to take relevant measures such as upgrading its infrastructure to ensure it functions in a vibrant manner.
A workshop on the topic 'Freedom of the Media' was also organised in the afternoon session of the celebration during which AIR, Imphal News Editor Dr A Ibomcha Sharma and Seven Sisters special correspondent Y Rupachandra presented their respective papers.
