National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) Chairman Manhar Valjibhai Zala has conveyed that the Commission has apprised the Chief Secretary regarding necessary measures to be taken up for the welfare of Safai Karamcharis in the State.
Making the above statement at a press meet held at Old Secretariat hall today, the Chairman maintained that the Commission has come to analyse and inspect the situation of the Safai Karmacharis and their living conditions.
He continued that the Commission has also directed the Chief Secretary to constitute a State Level Monitoring Committee at the District and the Divisional level within a month and to notify regarding the same to the Commission.
The Chairman further stated that the Chief Secretary has been further advised to constitute a State level Commission at the earliest.
Saying that there is no separate sanction for Safai Karamcharis in Manipur, he added that the labourers get minimum wages which is not enough to manage a family.
As such, he continued that the Chief Secretary has also been directed to facilitate special minimum wages for the Karamcharis.
Protective/Safety gear should be provided to Safai Karamcharis so as to prevent any health hazards or unwanted incidents at the work site, he said while conveying that the Commission has ordered for distribution of safety gear to the Karamcharis as well.
As the Safai Karamcharis are engaged in cleaning chocked nullah or blocked drains, they are more prone to sickness, the Chairman said while adding that routine health check-up should be conducted.
Maintaining that Ayushman Bharat Yojana, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is a significant scheme, the Chief Secretary has been advised to include Safai Karamcharis in the said scheme apart from facilitating PM's housing scheme and life insurance for them as well.
The Commission sat down with the Chief Secretary to deliberate the matter, he added.
