Imphal, August 14 2022:
On the occasion of 75th Manipur Independence Day, United Committee Manipur (UCM) has wished for a harmonious, healthy and egalitarian society.
In a release, UCM IPR secretary Leishemba Lamaba recalled the day when Manipur regained independence after 56 years under British colonial rule.
At midnight of August 14, 1947, independence was given to the then king Meidingu (Maharaj) Bodhchandra at the British political agent GP Stewart's residency, which is the present day Raj Bhavan.
Later, at around 7.10 am on the next day, Manipur was declared independent.
The British flag 'Union Jack' that was hoisted on April 27,1891 at Kangla was de-hoisted and replaced with the white flag embedded with 'Pakhangba gi Tuthuoup mapal' at 7.40 am along with firing of 18 rounds of cannon.
The flag that was hoisted on August 15, 1947 at Kangla is still preserved at Manipur State Museum, he elaborated.
While stating that history of Kangleipak (Manipur) for more than 2000 years is clearly written in the royal chronicle and puyas (ancient text), he continued that the written constitution of Kangleipak Manipur named 'Loyumba Sinyen' was already written in the 11th century.
It is an undeniable fact that different flags were used to represent the kingdom by 76 different kings from 33 AD to 1949.Flags used by king Khagem ba, Chingthangkhomba, Chandrakirti, Surchand and Bodhchandra are preserved in several institutions of the government including Manipur State Kala Academy Museum, Manipur State Museum and Kangla Museum, he informed.
While urging the people to remember the sacrifices made by the ancestors to make Manipur a strong, developed and self-sustained kingdom for more than 2000 years, Leishemba Lamaba exhorted all to preserve the identity protected by the ancestors.
