Sanitation campaign benefits villagers

Although it may sound something uncommon to many, villagers of interior Longjon village under Tousem Sub-Division of Tamenglong district are well benefited from Govt's Total Sanitation Campaign.
The campaign comes under UPA Government's 16-point Flagship Programmes.
Health and hygiene got a major boost in the village with the proper implementation of the scheme.
All the households of the village which is located on the bank of Barak River has a sanitary latrine each.
These latrines have been constructed with the materials provided by the Government under the scheme.
The materials include one commode, half bag of cement and two CI sheets of six feet in length.
This tiny village of Rongmei tribe is settled by people of 25 different surnames.

Ever since, the scheme is properly implemented in the village, the area has become so neat and clean.
Fishing is the main occupation of the villagers while yongchak, potato, chilli, and banana are the main products of the village.
However, the villagers are still facing the inconvenience of absence of power supply and bridge to reach the district headquarters.
Although the village has a primary school, most of the villagers sent their wards at the boarding schools in Tamenglong headquarters for education.
If anybody is ill, their relatives to have to carry them on carts to Tamenglong which is around 20 km away from the village.
